Out of commission

As hard I’ve tried to hide from it–ducking and dodging, slipping around corners–the bug got me. The nasty cold bug that’s been “going around.” Actually, I had no idea there was even a bug going around until I overheard a guy in Costco mention it last Tuesday. Dude was working at the register unloading items from the cart to the conveyor belt. He was coughing the whole time. His co-worker asked if he was sick. He said he had the cold that had been going around. I remember thinking to myself, I hope he doesn’t pass it on to me. I woke up Wednesday morning with a stuffy nose. Damn. I think I actually saw the germs settle on that jumbo size of Lawry’s seasoning.

I know no one likes being sick, but I have a strong feeling I dislike it more than anyone else on this planet. I do not like being unable to function. I would rather save my sick days at work for when I need to take care of some business, not be stuck at home because I’m actually sick.

Every time I get sick, I realize how much my house needs cleaning. Then I start thinking how it’s a perfect time to clean because I’m cooped up in the house and not going anywhere anyway so why not clean. Then I get up and my head starts spinning and I realize I can’t clean up because I have no freaking energy. It’s such a vicious cycle. It’s like your mind playing tricks on you.

Then there’s the feeling of being disconnected because I’m drugged up on cold medicine hoping it will make the bug go away faster. That never works. I used to hate when people would say a cold has to run it’s course. I would always think, well why are there so many so-called cold remedies on the market if that’s the case. I’ve since gotten a clue. There’s absolutely nothing out there on the shelf that will get that crap out of you in less than 5 days. Nothing. Believe me. I’m sure I’ve tried them all. Your best bet is to make yourself a hot toddy every night and sweat it out. The stronger, the better. After staggering to bed a few nights, you should be all better. Works for me every time.

The worst part of having a cold is that after my 5 day (or more) punishment is finally up, I feel like I’m on probation for at least another month because then I start coughing. I can’t ever seem to get over a cold and just be done with it. Nope, I have to cough for weeks afterward. And I only get a coughing spell when I get around a lot of people. Then I have to get the evil, side eye, like they’re thinking what the heck is wrong with that chic. Whatevs. At least I know how to cover my mouth when I’m coughing.

Thankfully, I’m on the mend now. Going into the probationary period. So I hope to be back to blogging more frequently again.  I’m just grateful I didn’t have that other bug. The one that rhymes with twine. Shudder.
